The area around the Trapper Peak summit is a Designated Wilderness. One of the most challenging is the Trapper Creek Trailhead, which has additional elevation gain, very steep slopes, and an elusive trail. There are a number of trailheads leading to trails of different levels of difficulty and elevation gain, so you can choose which one to take. There are some boulders to be crossed where using hands becomes necessary, and there is talus close to the summit, but nothing serious. Trapper Peak is one of the most-climbed of the Bitterroot Mountains, mostly because it is the highest and probably because it is not hard to climb. Most people stop to enjoy the view at the point-of-interest sign a couple of miles south of Darby, but there is a better viewpoint farther south, closer to Connor. Trapper Peak is the highest point on the huge ridge between Trapper Creek and Boulder Creek. In the summer months, head out on the hiking and biking trails, take a ride on 3,000 feet of zip lines at Yellowstone Aerial Adventures, or check out the action at the Wild West Yellowstone Rodeo.At 10,157 feet, Trapper Peak is the highest of the Bitterroot Mountains, about 11.7 miles from Darby, Montana. Here, you'll have access to a variety of accommodations, restaurants and fun activities like ice fishing, dog-sledding, sleigh rides and cross-country skiing in the winter. Bozeman is also an outdoor adventurer's paradise. The city sits between the park's north entrance – 91 miles away in Gardiner – and the west entrance (78 miles away) in West Yellowstone. Situated in southwest Montana, Bozeman is regarded as a home base for many visitors to Yellowstone National Park. During your visit to Columbia Falls, Backslope Brewing is a great spot to grab casual fare and a cold brew – and you can hire a local guide for a customized tour of the park with Glacier Adventure Guides. If you want to stay a little closer to the park, Columbia Falls – about 20 miles from the gateway at West Glacier – offers several types of lodging and vacation rentals. After long days of adventuring, relax in the nearby town of Whitefish at The Lodge at Whitefish Lake. This 50-mile drive crosses the Continental Divide at 6,646 feet at Logan Pass. While here, don't miss one of the most scenic drives in the U.S., the Going-to-the-Sun Road. Guides and outfitters are available year-round for activities like hiking, rafting, snowshoeing or even ice climbing.
